This panoramic photograph of Montreal was taken by James Blakeway. It features a beautiful twilight image of downtown Montreal as seen looking across the St. Lawrence River. Montreal is located on an island at the junction of the Ottawa and St. Lawrence Rivers and is the economic and cultural heart of the largely French-speaking province of Quebec. The tallest building, with its triangular-shaped roof, is 1000 rue de la Gauchetiere. The area along the river on the right is known as Old Montreal. It retains its historic character with the largest concentration of 17th, 18th and 19th Century buildings in North America. In the distance is Mount Royal (originally French Mont Real), the hill after which the city is named.
