Description

The panoramic photograph of Pisa was taken by James Blakeway. It features Pisa Cathedral and its famous leaning bell tower. The two structures are part of Pisa''s beloved Campo dei Miracoli, or Field of Miracles. Construction of the Romanesque Cathedral began in 1063 and work began on the Leaning Tower in 1174, which began to lean almost immediately. Pisa is also known for its famous University, founded in 1343, with over 30,000 students enrolled today. One of the university''s most famous scholars was Galileo. This former maritime republic was a very important commercial center during the Middle Ages and controlled a significant Mediterranean fleet.
