Description

This panoramic photograph of Belfast was taken by James Blakeway. Belfast is Northern Ireland''s largest city with a population of nearly 500,000, a third of Northern Ireland''s population. By 1900, Northern Ireland was one of Europe''s great manufacturing regions and led the world in linen production and shipbuilding. The world''s largest dry dock is located in Belfast. The ill-fated Titanic was built in Belfast by Harland and Wolff at the site of the two giant yellow cranes, which are referred to as Sampson and Goliath. At the far right in the distance is Parliament House.
